Pikes Peak Challenge Recap: Part I

On Saturday, I accomplished the most daunting physical feat I've ever attempted: the Pikes Peak Challenge!
For those of you who are new to the blog, the Pikes Peak Challenge is an annual fundraising event for the Colorado Brain Injury Association. Hikers pledge to raise funds for brain injury awareness and prevention, and a 6-week training plan is recommended for conditioning in anticipation of the rough and varied terrain of the trail. The hike consists of a 13.5 mile jaunt up the Barr Trail, gaining 7,400 vertical feet to reach the summit of Pikes Peak. The elevation at the top? A paltry 14,110 feet above sea level :-) Pikes Peak is not the tallest '14er' mountain in Colorado, however the Barr Trail is considered to be the most challenging in terms of vertical gain and distance.

Why did I decide to participate? My sister Annie lives in Colorado Springs, where she is earning her PhD in clinical psychology. In 2009 she completed the Pikes Peak Challenge, and this year she inspired me to register and train for the event.

So, being from Milwaukee (aka 634 feet above sea level), how did I train for the elevation? There was really no way to anticipate 1) how I would react to it... altitude sickness strikes randomly, and 2) without arriving 3 weeks early to fully acclimate, I would just have to prepare the best I could, cardiovascularly. Enter 6+ weeks of jogging, long walks, leg strengthening exercise and horseback riding as cross-training. I bought a Camelbak and some other gear to get prepared, and before I knew it I was the plane to Colorado, nervous as can be.

The Day Before the Hike
The morning after I arrived, I headed outdoors for a 3-hour long horseback ride through Garden of the Gods. This was a most enjoyable activity, but spending the time outside helped to acclimate me to the climate and varied terrain. When traveling to a higher elevation location, frequent hydration is key, so I chugged water before, during and after the ride. Later, Annie and I walked about 1.5 miles to the pre-hike rally, which helped get the circulation going again in our legs and more fresh mountain air flowing through our lungs.
The Pre-Hike Rally at the Olympic Training Center
What a great location to get all of the hikers motivated for the main event! After picking up our race packets - which included a Cambelbak water bottle, t-shirt and some other items - Annie and I met up with our fellow teammates.
Joe, Allison, Annie, Kristin
We enjoyed the provided dinner - pasta and salad (no vegetarian protein item - wahhh), before the short program began. Speakers included Chad Holliday, a who was the first TBI survivor to 'win' the Challenge, and chairwoman Alison Dunlap, a 2-Time Olympian and World / National Champion cyclist. Both had inspiring stories and practical advice, and Alison even recommended celebrating with the donuts at the summit house (ha!).
After the rally, our group took advantage of some photo opportunities before parting ways for the night.
Bahahaha
Annie, Moi, Allison, Joe, Kristin.
To the far right is Alison Dunlap, the Olympian... we wish she was on our team!
Annie and I continued to chug water and caught up on blog reading, and hit the hay around 9PM. We wanted to get to sleep, but both of us were up for at least another hour. With the alarm clock set for 3:45, our restlessness turned into anxiety... once asleep, I dreamt of nothing.
The Wee Hours, Pre-Hike
Fast forward to a few hours later! We woke up at 3:45, put on our gear, checked our packs and grabbed some breakfast. It was totally surreal to be up so early.
At about 4:15, we left Annie's apartment and headed to the rendezvous spot to carpool. While waiting for our teammates, we chugged water and nervously sang along with the radio. Once everyone arrived, we headed to Manitou Springs to register. The volunteers were cheerful and pleasant despite the cold, dark morning.

After signing in and pinning on our numbers, we headed to the transportation line. After a short van ride, we were dropped off at the Barr Trail trailhead. Upon taking in the view, I became totally freaked out... all that I could see were the lights from the hikers' headlamps, hundreds of them bobbling up the trail's steep switchbacks ... basically as high up the mountain as you could see. It was definitely a sight to behold!
After another group photo, we switched on our headlamps and joined the others on the trail... TO BE CONTINUED.

White Russians, magic carpet rides

Another weekend is coming to a close. Say it with me - ahhhhhhh... the sound of a relaxed exhalation.
This was a pretty good one, starting with The Big Lebowski outdoors on a giant screen and a few White Russian cocktails,
Coworker Andrew and me
Complete with goofy robes worn by most staff members. Classic.
Saturday morning, a challenging hike through Lapham Peak State Park.
Zak and I did the 'Moraine Ridge' trail, ~ 7 miles, not counting going off the trail about a mile uphill to climb an observation tower.
Toward the end I of the trail, I noticed this sign.
Alas, there were no 'Magic Carpet Rides' to be had. At that point of the hike, we could have really used one. What gives!!??
The rest of Saturday was spent with friends and this baby, and later - a great meal with Zak. Baked salmon with savory swiss chard and roasted broccoli.
Nutritious and delicious.
I am hitting the hay early tonight as I have a 6AM yoga class at Bikram Yoga Milwaukee. This is extraordinarily early for me, however I've been curious about 'hot yoga' for some time and my Groupon expires on Wednesday.
And - major bonus - I will be meeting Alison from Post-College Kitchen at the studio!
Question - Have you tried 'hot' yoga? Likes / dislikes?
I am most excited about the detoxifying and deep stretching.
Due to the fact I have uber-long hair and have to head to the office after class tomorrow, I am concerned about the sweat factor.

The Final Countdown!

Greetings! How is everyone doing tonight?

Today was a lovely day, kicked off with a 2(ish) mile run. I have attempted several times in the past to fit in a run before work, and today was the first day this year I have actually done it! Felt great and I can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

The day was a blur of rock show planning and other work-y stuff. Nothing new to report :-)

Side note: I. Love. This. Song. My friends recently had this as their 'Grand March' song at their wedding. Awesome. But seriously, it's stuck in my head as I think about the Pikes Peak Challenge. I am starting to get really excited / anxious as it's just 16 days away (!!!). Literally, it's 'The Final Countdown'.

Since the big hike is getting so close, I am re-vamping my training program to include an emphasis on cardio, strength and stretching exercises in near equal proportions. There are two long-distance hikes, which are exciting to think about, in addition to my favorite form of cross-training: horseback riding!
Obviously I've improved as a rider since last year when this photo was taken. I am also gonna request a horse that's a bit larger next time.

Oh yeah, and there's a Lady Gaga concert and a very special wedding in there too. Gotta love dancing as cardio :-) Especially when it's high-intensity booty shaking like I'll be doing at Gaga!
Yoga will also be important in leveling out my anxiety and getting in some much-needed deep stretching. I am not used to running so often, not to mention dancing in stilettos, so yoga should help immensely.

Here's le Grand (training) Plan for the final stretch:

This is not a mirage. Plus, cupcakes.

It's real! Egad! Finally!

July came and went, and somehow it's August 3rd. Ten days away from the Healthy Living Summit - can't wait - and 38 days until I climb Pikes Peak. In other words, it's crunch time.
After posting about the Pikes Peak Challenge, I reached out to Lindsay from Summit Sandwiches for some advice. She gave me some great training tips, which I will be posting soon. Thanks again, Lindsay!

Last week I jumped into training for the hike, here's what the plan (for now) is:
Monday - 1 hour run / walk + arms
Tuesday - 20 min. run + leg work
Wednesday - 1 hour run / walk
Thursday - 20 min. run + arms
Friday - rest day / cross train + leg work
Saturday - 1.5 hour run / walk
Sunday - Horseback riding + 20 min. run

This is what I intend to follow for the next couple weeks, anyhow. I need to fit in some stair workouts, there are a couple high school stadiums nearby whose bleachers I intend to use.

This past Saturday, I set out for an hour-long walk that turned into a 6.2 mile run / walk. I finally seemed to have found my stride! I finished in just over an hour and felt great, and soooooo sweaty. It's funny, I never thought I would describe being ridiculously sweaty as a positive thing?

Enough about that, time for some food porn :-) Recently, I checked out The Milwaukee Cupcake Company, the first known cupcake boutique in the area. I picked up a 4-pack of cupcakes, each named after a Milwaukee-metro neighborhood.
From bottom left, clockwise: The Cream City - Vanilla Bean, The Tosa - Salted Caramel, The Fox Point - Chocolate Coconut, The North Shore - Red Velvet.
Out of all flavors, the Tosa - Salted Caramel was the standout. Think caramel-laced buttercream frosting, fluffy Devil's food cake base and a surprise gooey caramel center. I'd like another, please!

Second best was the Cream City - Vanilla Bean, and I thought that the Fox Point - Chocolate Coconut and North Shore - Red Velvet were mediocre at best. Not sure if my batch was a tad stale or what, these 'cakes just didn't float my boat. I shall have to visit again soon and give them another chance :-)

Anyhow! Time to get to bed, I've got training in the morning and cupcakes to dream about.
